Gators Women’s Basketball Advances In SEC Tournament

 The 11th-seeded Florida Gators secured a 60-50 win against 14th-seeded Auburn on Wednesday in the first round of the SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament in Greensville, S.C.

Florida (15-16) advances to face sixth-seeded and No. 20 Alabama (23-7) in the second round at 8:30 p.m. Thursday on the SEC Network and ESPN 98.1-FM/850-AM WRUF.

The game remained tight throughout, with Auburn (12-17) making a late push to close the gap. After Florida built a 50-46 lead, Auburn’s Celia Sumbane pulled her team within 50-48 with two minutes left. However, Florida responded quickly. Liv McGill converted a three-point play to give the Gators a seven-point advantage with just under a minute remaining. Florida’s free-throw shooting proved critical, as Laila Reynolds and Kenza Salgues each hit two free throws in the final 60 seconds to seal the victory.

Some Player and Team Stats

Ra Shaya Kyle led the Gators with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Jeriah Warren added 14 points. McGill chipped in 11 points, eight assists and six rebounds to play a key role in Florida’s offensive and defensive efforts. Despite shooting only 35% from the field, Florida made up for it by going 21-of-23 from the free-throw line.

The Tigers shot just 30% from the field and struggled to maintain momentum as the game wore on.

Florida held a slim 27-25 lead at halftime after a low-scoring second quarter. Despite several lead changes in the first half, Florida found a way to pull away in the final minutes.
