CFB Top 25: Three Teams on Upset Watch in Week 3

Week 3 of college football isn’t the most exciting slate. Zero CFB Top 25 teams will face off against each other. Some teams begin conference play, while others continue their run of tuneup contests before the real grind of their 2023 schedule begins.

Despite the absence of any marquee matchups this weekend, there is still potential for more major upsets in the CFB Top 25 world. Here are three teams that could face trouble this Saturday:

No. 17 Ole Miss vs. Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech sits at 1-1 on the season with a win over SC State and a narrow loss to Louisville in its ACC opener. The Rebels are undefeated, but the two teams are comparable in most offensive categories. Tech QB Haynes King nearly matches Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart in passing yards. The Yellow Jackets are currently out-rushing Ole Miss as well.

The biggest factor in this potential upset scenario, however, is who Ole Miss plays next week — The Alabama Crimson Tide. This matchup is one of the biggest for the Rebels this season and might be the focal point of the team’s mindset right now. If Ole Miss overlooks Tech for the Tide, it could mean trouble in Oxford this weekend.

No. 11 Tennessee at Florida

The Gators and ‘Vols almost always put up a game to remember, especially in The Swamp. Fortunately for Billy Napier and UF, recent history has sided with Florida in these matchups.

Tennessee features a capable offense and likely has its best chance in year of snapping its losing streak in Gainesville. Napier and the Gators are coming off of a get-right win against McNeese and the Florida home faithful will be rowdy. Be ready for a wild matchup regardless of who emerges victorious.

No. 3 Florida State at Boston College

This one is a stretch, but let’s get weird.

Florida State is a top-five team in college football. There’s no question about that. Mike Norvell and the ‘Noles are finally reaping the benefits of their rebuild, but Boston College has caused FSU trouble throughout the entire process.

The Eagles last defeated FSU in 2017 in a 35-3 red-bandana beatdown. The ‘Noles have taken four straight since then, but three of those four games were decided by seven points or less. It would be reasonable to expect FSU to cruise to victory here, but its been hard to count the Eagles out in recent seasons.
