Gators Women’s Tennis Team Spends its 11th Week in ITA Top 20 This Season

After toppling No. 3 Michigan at home on March 22, the Gators Women’s Tennis Team has been dominating throughout the SEC. The team is currently riding a five-match win streak and looks to continue the streak with two top-15 matchups on the horizon.

The Spark

Before heading down to Gainesville, the Michigan Wolverines had only lost two matches on the season. Both losses had come to top-25 teams — No. 2 UNC and No. 25 Pepperdine.

They then bounced back by trouncing three straight conference rivals: Michigan State, Iowa and Nebraska.

When their plane touched down in the Sunshine State, they were hungry for more victims to keep their No. 3 ranking alive. However, the spectators at Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex saw predators turn to prey. The Gators ran away with the match, capturing the doubles point and polishing off three straight-set singles wins.

Sometimes, after a massive win, a team will relax too much and end up dropping its next match. The Gators had other plans.

They steamrolled their way through their next four SEC standoffs, and none of them were particularly close.

Mashing in the Magnolia State

UF’s women spent the weekend of March 24-26 showing the college tennis world that they owned the state of Mississippi.

Their trail of fire began in Starkville with a 5-2 win over Mississippi State, and it ended in Oxford with a 4-1 rout of Ole Miss.

Home is Where the Heart is

On fire, the Gators returned to Gainesville to lie in wait for Missouri. Clearly, the five-day break did not make them rusty; they won every single match against the Tigers.

Their most recent victory of the streak also came in the Ring, where they wrangled the Razorbacks, 5-2. Despite losing a doubles point they normally win, they came back with four straight singles wins. This team is versatile and dangerous.

Tough Road Ahead

While the Gators’ momentum is undeniable, their most challenging test is yet to come. They will be back on the road this Friday, April 7, to square off with No. 15 Tennessee in Knoxville. After that match concludes, they will only have a two-day break before a date with No. 5 Georgia in Athens.

If Florida can emerge from that weekend with a pair of wins, the team will be in a good position to crack the top 10.
