Hurricanes Suffer Tough Loss to the Andrew Jackson Tigers

The 3-2 Gainesville High School Lady Canes faced off against the 4-2 Andrew Jackson High School Tigers in this Saturday thriller. The Lady Tigers came in eager and rested after their 62-21 win over Riverside High School the previous Monday.

Quarter 1

The Tigers won the tip-off to start the game. The Hurricanes scored the first points after an early shooting foul by the Tigers. Jackson responded quickly with a 2-point shot from junior Kennedy Hill, putting the Tigers up 2-1. Despite great defensive play by Jackson senior Jasnea Hall-McDowell, Gainesville began to rack up points and take an early lead of 8-2. Yet, the Tigers responded with consecutive great shots, bringing the score to 9-8 in the Canes’ favor at the end of the quarter.

Quarter 2

The second quarter showed the great defensive power of both teams with the first points of the quarter being scored by the Hurricanes after three minutes of play. Gainesville continued to find the net with shots from senior Leyah Houston. A swift side-step three-pointer by Hall-McDowell brought Jackson back in the game and ended the first half with the Hurricanes up 15-13.

Quarter 3

GHS started the third quarter with possession but quickly turned the ball over to the Tigers. Jackson sophomore Kimora Hester tied the game up 15-15 with a layup to start the third. Hurricanes senior Ta’Niyah Walker responded with a layup, putting them back on top. Jackson found their first lead of the game with a continued dominant performance by Kennedy Hill. A big three by Hall-McDowell extended the Tigers’ lead 24-19. The Tigers eventually gained the largest lead of the game 29-19. Gainesville started to swing the momentum back with consecutive plays by Leyah Houston late in the quarter. Jackson headed into the fourth up 30-26 after a dominant third quarter.

Quarter 4

Jackson started off hot as senior Xaniya Jackson found the net to keep them in the lead. A layup by Gainesville Ta’Niyah Walker kept the Canes’ hopes alive, hoping to close the 36-28 deficit. A great takeaway and layup by Leayah Houston helped the Hurricanes rack up points in the fourth, but the swift Tiger offense couldn’t be stopped. Gainesville fought until the end with a late layup by sophomore Jayden Terry. The Tigers ended the game on top 46-33.
