Gators Gymnastics NCAA Championships Recap and Preview

Florida gymnastics emerged victorious in their NCAA Championship semifinal meet. As a result, the Gators will compete in the team final on Saturday, April 16.

Recap of Semifinal

The Gators stumbled on vault, the meet’s opening event. Specifically, nerves and anxiety lead to some extra steps on a few different dismounts. Even so, Megan Skaggs and Trinity Thomas led the team with scores of 9.90.

Florida fought back on the bars. Shockingly, the event experienced a minor delay after some of the equipment’s weight anchors became loose. Nonetheless, Thomas posted a 9.975. The performance won her the individual event title.

Then, Florida continued their comeback during the beam event. Four team members received scores of 9.9 or better.

Finally, the meet concluded on the floor. Every Gator recorded a score of 9.925 or better. Above all Trinity Thomas recorded a 10, the first ever perfect score on floor by a Florida athlete in NCAA competition. Consequently, she earned the event and all-around individual title.

Moreover, Trinity Thomas’ accomplishments deserve some additional recognition. She and Bridget Sloan are the only two Gators to ever win three individual titles in one NCAA Championship meet. Additionally, her score of 10.0 on the floor was the first time someone has hit that mark in an NCAA Semifinal since 2005.

Preview of Final

Florida will take on Utah, Oklahoma and Auburn in the NCAA National Championship. Although they are yet to battle with Utah this year, they have previous faced Oklahoma and Auburn.

Against the Sooners, they won by a score of 198.10-197.75.

Differently, they tied the Tigers 198.575-198.575.

It was the only meet the Gators did not emerge victorious.

The championship is excepted to be very close, but the Gators currently look like the team to beat.
