Gators Baseball Shutout by Seminoles

The Florida Gators (21-12, 5-7) were shutout 5-0 by the Florida State Seminoles (19-13, 7-8) on Tuesday to even the series on the season. They now will have to pack everything up and make their way to Tennessee to take on the Vanderbilt Commodores for the weekend.

Seminole’s Pitching Keeps Gators Quiet

The Gators offense could not get many hits against the Seminoles. As a whole, it only had two hits in the game. Furthermore, it struck out 14 times. The only two players to get a hit against the Noles were Sterlin Thompson and Mac Guscette. Also, the Gators only earned three walks. In the end, the Gators left six runners on base.

It was a quiet night for the homerun leaders on the team. Jud Fabian and Wyatt Langford went a combined 0-for-8 in the game. While they only struck out twice, they could not get any hits to spark this Gator offense. One other player who struggled for Florida was Colby Halter. Halter went hitless in the game and struck out in three of his four at bats. Overall, Florida will be hoping to erase this game from its memory and quickly move on to the next one.

Gator Pitchers Start Out Rough, but Finish Strong

For the second week in a row, Nick Pogue started for the Gators. However, this start came against a tougher opponent than Florida A&M. To begin the game, Pogue walked the first batter. Florida State got to him shortly after that with back-to-back homeruns that put the Gators down 3-0. And after giving up three straight hits – including the two homeruns – he was pulled. He only recorded one out in the inning before being relieved. He finished with three hits given up and four earned runs in just 1/3 of an inning.

Head coach Kevin O’Sullivan brought in Tyler Nesbitt to replace Pogue. Nesbitt allowed one more run in the first to put the Gators down 5-0 by the end of the inning. He pitched through the next 2 2/3 innings, which he allowed one earned run on three hits and two walks.

Nick Ficarrotta got the next call out of the bullpen for Florida to begin the third inning. His night would be better than the previous pitchers as he paired one hit with three strikeout in his 2 2/3 innings for the Gators. While he did get the first two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Ficarrotta’s night ended before he could get the third out.

Philip Abner came to the mound in the sixth to finish off the inning. For Abner, he only pitched through the bottom of the seventh. He went 1 1/3 against Florida State, striking out three in his appearance on the mound.

Karl Hartman got the nod to finish the night for the Gators. Hartman came in and struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth to finish the game. While the Florida pitchers did not give up anymore runs outside of the first inning, it was not enough as it fell 5-0 to the Seminoles with all the damage coming in the first inning.

In total, Florida used five pitchers on the night. These pitchers struck out eight, but gave up seven hits that resulted in the five runs for the Seminoles.
