Week 6 High School Football Preview

Quite a few schools are idle this week, but there are still a few notable match ups on tap in area high school football.

GHS (3-2) at Forest (4-1) – 7:30 PM

The Wildcats will be looking for their second straight win over a Gainesville school, after taking down Eastside last Friday. Conversely, this will be back-to-back Marion County match ups for GHS, who fell on the road to North Marion. A shootout could very well be in the works, as both offenses average over 30 points per game. The Hurricanes won last year’s game at Citizens Field, 35-19.

Oak Hall (3-1) at St. Francis (2-2) – 7 PM

The Wolves were off last Friday and have taken a few extra days to prepare for this rivalry on Homecoming. It will also be a homecoming for St. Francis head coach Scott McDaniel, who previously coached at Oak Hall for eight seasons.

“Having been over there, and now being here on the other side of the rivalry makes the night even more special,” McDaniel said.

The Eagles are off to a surprising 3-1 start under first year head coach Matt DiBernardo, who has won more games this season for Oak Hall than the last two seasons combined.

“I’m just very happy with all of our kids as a whole, with their work ethic and demeanor,” DiBernardo said. “I’m very proud to coach these guys.”

St. Francis has won four of the last six meetings between the two schools, who are located just four miles apart.

Bradford (3-2) at Santa Fe (2-1) – 7:30 PM

The Raiders return from a bye to host a district foe in Bradford. Santa Fe has averaged over 45 points per game and over 400 yards per game thus far, and should expect to put up similar numbers against the Tornadoes. The Raiders were also able to hold extra practice thanks to the off week.

“It gave us a chance to self-evaluate where we’re at,” head coach Bill Wiles said. “We used those three days to improve on what we felt we needed to improve.”

This will be the first time these two teams have faced one another since 2010.

Other match ups around the area include Eastside-North Marion, P.K. Yonge-Keystone Heights, Chiefland-Trenton, Newberry-Branford, and Williston-Dixie County.
