Florida Football: Jim McElwain on Ole Miss

Gator football had a nail-biting 28-27 victory this past Saturday as freshman Antonio Callaway scored the winning touchdown with just over a minute left in the game. Florida is 4-0 and now back in the Top 25; 25th in the AP Poll and 23rd in the Coaches Poll. Florida coach Jim McElwain says that keeping his players level headed after returning to the top 25 will be a learning experience.

“There’s two things…how you handle adversity and how you handle success…it’s always a learning experience. Part of it is really going back and explaining the why and maybe how you’ve had success and not putting Saturday before what we need to do now.”

The team is now preparing to face a talented third ranked Ole Miss this Saturday. Florida quarterback Will Grier has played all of the last two games but McElwain says the quarterback position is not yet solidified and Grier still has work to do.

“Those two drives at the end were what he’s supposed to do. That’s what you do when you play the position. We practice it that way and he executed it. There were a lot of drives there that weren’t executed so [we have] a long ways to go.”

Looking towards Ole Miss, head coach Hugh Freeze’s offensive background has made the Rebel offense a force to be reckoned with and McElwain says despite the exceptional talent on the Gator defense, it will face challenges come Saturday.

“I think this will be a great challenge for them. They’re going against these big, tall, fast wide receivers. We’ll see how they handle that. That should be a fun match up in this game and yet up front we’ve got to be able to create some pressure to [keep] Chad (Kelly) from setting his feet.”

The Florida Gators will host the Ole Miss Rebels this Saturday in the Swamp at 7:00 PM. Live coverage for the game begins at 3pm on ESPN Gainesville 95.3 FM.
