The Florida softball team faces Liberty on the first day of the University of Florida Aquafina Invitational
A chilly night in Gainesville did not stop the Florida softball team from continuing to remain unbeaten (12-0) after conquering Liberty 11-0 Friday. It was a big game offensively for the number one ranked Gators with Taylore Fuller’s grand slam home run and shots by Lauren Haeger and Kayli Kvistad as well. Florida packed it up early as they run ruled the Flames in the fifth inning. In the circle Haeger allowed only one hit while throwing the shutout. Haeger says she was just trying to make quality pitches. “Making quality pitches regardless of who were playing, when were playing,
what degrees it is out here.” Fuller’s grand slam came in the third inning and she says she made an adjustment after her first at bat in the game. “My first at-bat, I was trying to pull the ball a little too much; I just tried to drive it through the middle and it happened to work for me.” Florida coach Tim Walton feels Fuller’s home run made a big impact on the game. “I thought that Fuller’s home run was huge, getting that early in the game after we had a couple innings of struggle. I say struggle because we had runners in scoring position with an opportunity to do some things. But I thought we had some good swings.” Freshman Kayli Kvistad hit her second homer of the season bringing in two runs for the Gators, extending their lead to 8-0. Although it was a bit colder then normal Florida didn’t let the weather become a factor in tonight’s match up. The Aquafina Invitational will continue at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium Saturday. Walton shared his thoughts on the remaining games for the Gators. “I felt this was going to be a competitive weekend for play, I thought all the teams have good coaches, and some pretty good offenses, so it should be pretty good.” Florida will face Illinois State at noon Saturday and then face Kansas at 2:15.
