Gator Baseball Opens Season Friday

The Florida baseball team opens up its 2014 season tonight at McKethan Stadium.

Florida will host the Maryland Terrapins this weekend in their first three-game set of their centennial season. The Gators are looking to redeem themselves after a 29-30 finish in the 2013 season.

The Gators return 18 letterwinners this year, such as junior infielder Josh Tobias and junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Harris. Although the Gators have a good set of veterans on hand, head coach Kevin O’Sullivan says that he is focusing on getting the freshman out on the field as much as possible.

According to sophomore infielder Richie Martin, the newer players have already had an impact on their teammates, developing a friendly bond and improving the chemistry on the field.

The Terrapins will test that bond when they send out righties Jake Stinnett, Mike Shawaryn, and Jared Price this weekend. The Gators will counter with lefty Bobby Poyner, and righties Brett Morales and Karsten Whitson.

Maryland head coach John Szefc is ready to showcase what the Terrapins have been working on in the off-season, saying he is confident in his squad.

You can hear live coverage of the game tonight starting at 6:50 on ESPN 850 WRUF.
