The Florida Gator soccer team came into the season opener against Florida Gulf Coast with a lot of question marks. The Gators had already lost an exhibition to UCF and only brought back six starters from last year’s squad.
Any lack of confidence in the team was restored, however, in the 81st minute of the opener when freshman Savannah Jones put the Gators up top 2-1 and Jones would add another goal just a few minutes later to give the Gators a 3-1 win over Gulf Coast.
With her big game, Jones became the first freshman for Florida to score two goals in her first outing since 1995. While Jones may have been the star of the game, the Gator defense played a magnificent match as well. Florida allowed only one shot throughout the contest.
The Gators are now 1-0 on the season and will host Oregon State (0-1, 0-0 Pac-12) at James G. Pressly Stadium on Sunday at 7 p.m.
