The first overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft is focused on his game, his team and the starting spot.
One Day at a Time
In the early days of the Browns’ training camp, Baker Mayfield is saying all the right things. The 23-year-old rookie is no stranger to hard work, and training camp will be more of the same for him. Mayfield is focused on improving one day at a time. To him, training camp is “a little over twenty days to get better” and “every day is an opportunity.”
Mayfield’s positive mindset and work ethic is a huge asset for him and his team. Baker was a two-time walk-on in college and became the first ever college walk-on to be selected first overall in the NFL Draft.

Baker Wants Starting Gig
While Hue Jackson has made it clear that Tyrod Taylor is currently the Browns’ starting QB, Mayfield is aiming for the job. Mayfield spoke after the first day of camp, saying “I would never get my mind right to be a back up.”
This is not his first time fighting to be his team’s starting quarterback. At Texas Tech, Mayfield beat out Davis Webb to start as a true freshman and a walk-on. At Oklahoma, he beat Cody Thomas and Trevor Knight to start for the Sooners.
Team First
Baker Mayfield has been very outspoken about doing everything he can to achieve team success. He isn’t worried about the fact that his team is coming off an 0-16 season. Mayfield said “It does not matter if you win the Super Bowl or you go 0-16, you start fresh and you have not done anything for this season yet. We are working to be the best team in the country and that it our mindset.” Mayfield signed his rookie contract on July 24th, in which he chose not to remove offset language from the deal. When asked about the deal, Baker said “Both parties involved, we had one goal; to make sure that I was here from Day 1 and be a part of this team, so that we could improve every day.”
For Mayfield, he will play his first NFL action when the Browns take on the Giants on August 9th in the preseason opener.
