Florida’s Katie Medina blooped a single over the shortstop with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh inning to give Florida a walkoff 4-3 win against Alabama Birmingham in the first game of a Super Regional in Gainesville.
Medina broke an 0 for 16 drought for her with the single and it gave Florida the win despite leaving 13 runners on base including three in the sixth inning when it loaded the bases with no outs and failed to score a run. Gators coach Tim Walton believes that the Gators did well against UAB’s tough pitching.
While UAB threw out their best , UF countered with ace Hannah Rogers who struggled somewhat but still threw a complete game, allowing only two earned runs. The Blazers got the early lead against Rogers, but she says keeping her cool is important when getting behind.
The Gators will look to close out UAB on Sunday when they will most likely give two-way player Lauren Haeger the ball in the circle. First pitch is set for tomorrow at noon. Florida must win one game to advance to the College World Series; if UAB wins the first game, a deciding game will be played at 3pm.
