Rough Night for Girl’s High School Basketball in Area

Five high school girl’s basketball teams from the area were in action last night in their respective regional semi-finals or finals.

Disappointing Results

Ponte Vedra Nease defeated Gainesville in the 7A regional semi finals 71-45. The Hurricanes were outscored 23-11 in the second quarter and could not get back into the contest after that. Gainesville finished their season at 22-8.

Head coach David Gordon offered high praise for Ponte Vedra Nease before the game on Tuesday night.

Moving onto another local team, Eastside lost to Ponte Vedra 42-47 in the Region 2-6A semi-finals. The Rams finished 17-10 on the season, including a perfect 3-0 in their district.

Head coach Lonnika Thompson, who had a professional career overseas, mentioned that her team’s biggest strength is their defensive prowess.

While the season ended in disappointment for Eastside, Thompson has a lot to look forward to for next season. She will return her two leading scorers in DeAsia Danzy (14.2 points per game) and Breezay Miles (8.2 points per game).

Fernandina Beach defeated Newberry 78-46. Newberry went down by 16 at the half and was outscored by an additional 14 points in the 3rd quarter. The Panthers ended their season at 19-7.

Lafayette took down Hawthorne 56-38 in the Region 3-1A finals. The Hornets had won five straight games before the disappointing loss to end their season.

Wildwood beat Trenton 47-34 in the Region 4-1A finals. The Tigers were only down by 4 points at the half, but Wildwood dominated after the intermission to secure the victory.

P.K. Yonge was supposed to take on University Christian in the Region 1-4A finals, but the game was postponed until Wednesday night.
