Gators Women’s Basketball Gets Big Win On Senior Day

In front of a season-high crowd of 3, 049, the Gators women’s basketball team defeated SEC foe and 15th ranked Georgia in a Senior Day nail bitter, 61-57  on Sunday.

It was a nip and tuck game all day and even though the Gators led by two at halftime, they shot poorly in the first 20 minutes of play, only making 33% of their shots from the field and a mere 11% from behind the arc.  The Gators also played the majority of the first half without power forward Jennifer George, who was whistled for two early fouls.

In the second half, neither team could seize a big lead which resulted in eight different lead changes, but with George back from foul trouble, the Gators were able to feed her the ball down low, allowing her to score a team high 15 points in the game.

While George was taking care of the paint, freshman guard Andrea Vilaro Aragones and senior shooting guard Jordan Jones combined for 12 points from three-point land.  Senior point guard Lanita Bartley added 11 points of her own, four of them coming from the charity stripe with less than 15 seconds to play to ice the win for the Gators.

The win was huge for Florida as it improves to 17-10 overall and to 7-7 in the SEC; Florida takes to the court again on Thursday with a game against SEC rival Mississippi State.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in the O’Connell Center.
