For a little bit, it looked like the second ranked Florida Gators might struggle to take down American Lacrosse Conference foe Ohio State. A late first-half run and huge second halves from Shannon Gilroy, Brittany Dashiell and Kitty Cullen helped the Gators (13-0, 1-0 ALC) take care of business, beating Ohio State (3-5, 0-1 ALC) in a gritty, physical contest 13-7.
After a 21-minute scoring drought to open the game that saw Ohio State take a 1-0 lead, Florida surged to end the first half, scoring three unanswered goals to head into the half leading 3-1.
The momentum carried into the second half as Brittany Dashiell and Shannon Gilroy both struck within the first minute after the break to extend the Florida lead. Gator head coach Amanda O’Leary was proud of her team capturing the momentum and playing hard after the half.
Gilroy scored five second half goals, Dashiell added a hat trick, and Kitty Cullen chipped in with two of her three goals after the break for all 10 of Florida’s second half goals, a stat that impressed O’Leary.
Next up for Florida is a trip to State College, Pennslyvania for a weekend contest against Penn State. Opening draw is set for noon.
