If you needed more proof as to why the Florida Gators are ranked the number one team in the nation look no further.
The No.1 Florida Gators defeated the Tennessee Volunteers three sets to none in their SEC home opener. The Gators were led by Rhamat Alhassan with a team-leading 13 points. Alhassan continued to disrupt the attack for her opponents as she had a team-leading six block assists. Coming into the game, Alhassan was ranked second nationally in blocks per set (1.85).
Setting the tone early
Alhassan may have led the team in scoring but it was Rachel Kramer who set the tone early on Friday night. Kramer scored 6.5 of her 12.0 points in the first set. The 6-8 sophomore had a team-high 10 kills and four block assists.
Gators head coach Mary Wise says that even though Kramer had a great game, she would probably be down on herself for the shots she could’ve had.
Her teammate Carli Snyder says the thing she really likes seeing from Kramer is her increase in confidence.
Getting defensive
Florida once again was a force to be reckoned with as they continued to give their opponents’ struggles offensively. The Gators had 13 total team blocks compared to the Volunteers.
The leader defensively was Cheyenne Huskey. The sophomore led the team with three solo blocks and five block assists. Husky credits her success against the Volunteers to her teammates.
Wise says that the reason why the Gators have been so great defensively is because of the great play of Alhassan and Husky.
Having the right mindset
Friday nights game against Tennessee was the first game after recently being ranked the number one in the nation. Wise says that her team needed to be prepared to receive Tennessee’s best shot.
Florida will continue to defend their top spot this Sunday at home against LSU. The match begins at 3 p.m.
