Gators Softball Gets Second WCWS Win

The Florida Gator softball team (57-8) was on a role Friday night as they shutout LSU 7-0. This makes it the second shutout for the Gators in the 2017 Women’s College World Series.

Kelly Barnhill (26-3) once again started for the Gators as she had a dominant performance and the offense had an even better one. Barnhill threw seven scoreless innings and allowed just two hits.

The team recorded its 40th shutout of the season—a program record.

The game was scoreless through the first three innings though both teams were able to get runners in scoring position.

Florida was able to break the scoreless tie during the top of the fourth inning with a double down the right line from Chelsea Herndon, that allowed Aleshia Ocasio and Alex Voss, pinch runner for Jordan Roberts, to score and lead the Gators to a 2-0 lead.

During the sixth inning, Janell Wheaton got her first career postseason home run with a solo to left to give the Gators the 3-0 lead.

That didn’t stop the Gators from scoring, in the top of the seventh inning the Gators added four more runs to the board. Here’s how it happened.

  • Sophia Reynoso singled through the left side
  • Theresa Swertfager out at first, SAC bunt; Reynoso advanced to second
  • Amanda Lorenz singled up the middle, advanced to second on the throw, RBI; Reynoso scored. Switzer pinch ran for Lorenz
  • Kayli Kvistad homered to right center; Switzer scored.
  • Nicole DeWitt walked
  • Ocasio doubled to right center; DeWitt advanced to third
  • Wheaton flied out to right field; Ocasio advanced to third; DeWitt scored.

Florida now has three home runs in the Women’s College World Series.

Up Next

With this win, the Gators advance to the WCWS semifinals. They will have Saturday off and be back on the field Sunday at 1 p.m. to face a to be determined during the elimination round.
